July/August Book Club Selection:
Give and Take by Adam Grant

Thank you to those who participated!
See recordings below

Welcome to a virtual book club designed specifically for technical women. Global Tech Women selects books requested by the community on topics of interest for women around the world and provides regular meet-ups for us to gather virtually at convenient hours, network and learn from one another.

Our second Book Club selection, Give and Take, is an excellent work by Adam Grant who shows us that nice people really can be successful in business! Many women are givers and often feel they cannot be themselves in the competitive work environment -- not so! According to research provided in Give and Take, Adam Grant shows us how we can leverage our authentic selves to influence others and reach our maximum potential providing great stories and interviews. We hope you will share your take-aways as we discuss this book in light of our experiences.

Are you a giver, taker or matcher? Check out Adam Grant's website where you can find out and ask others

to provide a 360 degree evaluation.

From the Give and Take Website describing the book

"Give and Take changes our fundamental ideas about how to succeed—at work and in life. For generations, we have focused on the individual drivers of success: passion, hard work, talent, and luck. But in today’s dramatically reconfigured world, success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. Give and Take illuminates what effective networking, collaboration, influence, negotiation, and leadership skills have in common.

Using his own groundbreaking research as the youngest tenured professor at Wharton, Grant examines the surprising forces that shape why some people rise to the top of the success ladder while others sink to the bottom. In professional interactions, it turns out that most people operate as either takers, matchers, or givers. Whereas takers strive to get as much as possible from others and matchers aim to trade evenly, givers are the rare breed of people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return.

These styles have a dramatic impact on success. Although some givers get exploited and burn out, the rest achieve extraordinary results across a wide range of industries. Combining cutting-edge evidence with captivating stories, this landmark book shows how one of America’s best networkers developed his connections, why the creative genius behind one of the most popular shows in television history toiled for years in anonymity, how a basketball executive responsible for multiple draft busts transformed his franchise into a winner, and how we could have anticipated Enron’s demise four years before the company collapsed—without ever looking at a single number.

Praised by bestselling authors such as Dan Pink, Tony Hsieh, Dan Ariely, Susan Cain, Dan Gilbert, Gretchen Rubin, Bob Sutton, Robert Cialdini, David Allen, and Seth Godin—as well as senior leaders from Google, McKinsey, Merck, Estée Lauder, Nike, and NASA--Give and Take opens up an approach to work, interactions, and productivity that is nothing short of revolutionary. This visionary approach to success has the power to transform not just individuals and groups, but entire organizations and communities."

Adam Rifkin, Founder PandaWhale
Adam Rifkin’s introductions have led to two marriages, hundreds of jobs, dozens of company fundings, and approximately 12 new business partnerships.

Contrary to what you might think, Adam (43) is an inherently shy introvert and doesn’t spend a lot of time making introductions relative to his impact. He is a successful serial tech entrepreneur who spends 80+ hours per week
rapidly scaling his current company, PandaWhale.
