The Power of Hackathons: How to Leverage Short-Term Development Cycles to Your Advantage
“Hackathons” are events centered around projects designed to be completed quickly. They often take place in the course of only a weekend. Planning a hackathon can be a great way to accelerate innovation and foster a sense of community across teams. In addition to holding our own hackathons, we can learn valuable ways to move faster in our normal development cycles from these events. This presentation will inform attendees about the growing hackathon culture in technology and show them practical ways to leverage this culture at their workplaces.
About: Amanda attended her first hackathon as a freshman in college and fell in love with the innovative fast-paced dynamic. She was able to gain confidence, build lasting friendships, and learn skills she would not have developed in a classroom setting because of her experiences at hackathons. She became a coach for Major League Hacking to attend events and help organizers create good experiences for their attendees. She is excited about the potential of this concept and the growth of community continues to experience every year. |

The Intersection of Computer Vision and Machine Learning
Machine Learning (ML) is a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that provides computers with the ability to learn and make predictions. Machine Learning can be applied across several disciplines in order to make predictions. One such disciple, Predictive Policing, uses Machine Learning to predict the likelihood of crime. This talk introduces S. A. M. (Suspicious Activity Monitor), a Predictive Policing, Machine Learning program, that predicts crime based on a given set of circumstances. The "secrets" and technologies to bringing a Machine Learning program, like S. A. M., to life are explained and demonstrated during this talk.
About: Kesha Williams is a software engineer with over 20 years’ experience specializing in web application development. In addition to being a software engineer with Chick-fil-A, she trains and mentors thousands of software developers in the US, Europe, and Asia while teaching at the University of California. She's authored courses on Java, Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Augmented Reality (AR). She most recently won the Think Different Innovation Award from Chick-fil-A for her work on investigating how emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), Computer Vision/Facial Recognition, and the Internet of Things (IOT) can enhance restaurant operations and customer experiences. |

Getting to Present
Your growth as a technical leader involves sharing your ideas/accomplishments with your industry peers. Informally attendance at an external professional conference begins this process. Presenting at such an event is the next step on the technical leader ladder. To achieve this milestone in your career you need to view it as a journey. While the adage “It’s the journey not the destination” applies you have a goal to present.
Depending on the competition of the conference and their processes it may take a few attempts. The process may involve just writing an abstract or providing a full paper for review. Then there’s the preparing the presentation/poster for the event. Comprehending the physical and mental aspects of public speaking is necessary for a successful presentation. Finally, you present your ideas and work to your peers. In this talk I will outline the steps, strategies, tactics and requirements for “Getting to Present.” Using travel as an analogy the talk will: provide insight into picking the conference/workshop/symposium, give an overview into what is involved in writing an abstract or paper, advise on using reviewer feedback, provide guidelines for creating your poster/demo/presentation, give tips for your presentation. Summary handout will be provided. About Anne: Dr. Anne Meixner has participated in numerous technical conferences as a presenter and as a reviewer. She has two best paper awards from the IEEE sponsored conference International Test Conference. While at intel Corporation she was awarded 1-2 best paper awards and 1 best poster award. With a passion for helping others she has coached other engineers to be successful in presenting and has provided valuable feedback on both written and slides by peers. Anne works as a semiconductor engineering consultant and technical leader coach. |

Brand Switching Behavior of Millennial Muslim Consumer
Video is not available.
|
The motivation behind this study is to examine the brand switching behavior of millennial Muslim consumers living in two different cultures. It is a general perception that consumer behavior is influenced by religion but what if consumers behavior is analyzed through different set of constructs (One set is related to religious beliefs and other set is related to brand’s features). Moreover, what if the millennial consumers belong to two different cultures. Is there any variation because of cultural difference?

She has a PhD from University of Malaya, Malaysia and MBA from Riphah International University, Pakistan. Her current research interests are Religion, Consumer Behavior, and Muslim women Behavior using Behavioral theories and models. |

Harnessing the Power of Creativity to Thrive in a Male
Dominated Environment Creativity is key for women empowerment and growth when they work in male dominated sectors. Women need to break the mold and be bold enough to act beyond existing predefined parameters and traditions. It is not about thinking “outside of the box” but about understanding there is no box at all. Harnessing the power of innovation and creativity will not only allow women to shrive and transform their working environment but also make them grow to reach their full potential and fill the leadership positions in those sectors where males outnumber them. The demand for creativity and creative thinking is increasing and will fuel economies in the future. The role of women in creating, adapting and diffusing innovation is a key enabler for women empowerment and for the adoption of a more harmonious approach to gender. Harnessing the power of creativity is the key for women to thrive in a male dominated environment.

My Journey as an Intrapreneur & Entrepreneur
I’ve enjoyed both entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship roles immensely and I found both to be challenging, fun, and rewarding. The DNA of an entrepreneur and intrapreneur are very similar. Generically speaking, these include:
Hunger for solving a problem, risk taking, visionary, ideator/creator, high-self esteem. The “how to execute” as an entrepreneur vs. an intrapreneur is where there are differences (and similarities). Both are hard roads, but in my experience, you’re either driven to make it happen or hesitant. Hesitation will kill an inspiring entrepreneur or intrapreneur. You must believe in what you’re doing and transparently and honestly have the capabilities to get others on board with you. About Preeti: IIM Bangalore Alumni, Preeti has 22 years of experience in Software development, Cloud Infrastructure Management, Enterprise Applications Delivery, Virtualization, Distributed Computing and Open Source Platform. She is working as a Staff Program Manager in VMware, driving corporate initiative called InterARC (Interoperability as a release criteria for SDDC products). Prior to VMware, she has worked with Yahoo!, managed global delivery of Cloud computing and Media products. She had a successful entrepreneur journey as “Founder Director” of an IT Startup, developed and Implemented a Distributed Application – Court Information System (a suite of 7 Products) which had been installed in 63 Courts of Mississippi (USA). Currently she is an Advisor & Chief mentor for a budding startup in healthcare –eManageHealth |

Fault Injection Software to evaluate software resiliency in the System
|
No matter how good software programs are, all software systems will contain faults and be exposed to faults from the environment. Therefore, an important aspect of any software component is how resilient it is to faults. Fault injection is a software technique to introduce faults into the code for improving the coverage and usually used with stress testing for robustness of the developed software. The concept of using fault injection for software component testing seems very appealing. Questions like what type of faults that arise in real systems, how to emulate them in software and is the system suitable for testing with Faults? This paper provides a technique to inject software faults in the code.
