Diversity: It's Not Just About Fairness
Beryl Nelson, Google
Session is available on demand here (duration 1:03:28) (Krakow, Poland)
Why should it matter whether you work in a team in which people all think the same way, or have different life experiences and points of view? And what can you personally do to improve diversity in your organization?
Beryl will open her talk with some of the wealth of research and data available about the value of a diverse team composition in terms of financial results and innovation. However, making a diverse team effective is not simple. The second part of the talk will include data relating to barriers to the effectiveness of diverse teams. One of the most difficult problems to deal with, and to measure, is unconscious bias. Why is it that 52% of Fortune 500 CEOs are over 6 feet tall (182.8 cm), and about a third are over 6 feet 2 inches (187.8 cm)? Imaginative researchers have found statistical methods that can measure unconscious bias and other barriers to effectiveness. People who are aware of these barriers can find ways to overcome them, as Beryl will show with a few examples. Finally, the talk will also focus on recommendations to interested individuals on what they can personally do to improve the diversity of their teams.
Beryl Nelson is an Engineering Manager at Google in Krakow, Poland. Beryl gained her undergraduate degree in Math at MIT and went on to obtain an MS in Biology at the University of Utah with an NSF Graduate Fellowship. She moved in 1981 to the Department of Computer Science at U of U as a programmer in the Symbolic Computation Laboratory. From there, she moved into a career in industry, first with the company Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) as a software engineer and manager, working primarily in computer languages. One notable early success at DEC was being deeply involved in the release of version 1 of Common Lisp, which was released the same month as Guy Steele's book, Common Lisp: The Language (to which she is also a contributor).
In 1995, Ms Nelson moved to Tokyo, Japan, where, after a short career break to look after her young children, she joined the company Epos as Chief Software Designer and Head of Software Department. There she worked on an automated integrated circuit tester. In 2004, the Nelson family moved to Hyderabad, India. Amongst the many and varied projects that she was part of in India, she is most proud of NuVia, an artificial intelligence project related to health care, at the company GHX. In 2009, Ms Nelson began working for Google in Hyderabad, on the engineering productivity team. She moved to Google Krakow in 2011, initially working in websearch and recently in infrastructure.
In addition to her main work, Mrs Nelson has also become interested in the published research on the data on diversity within business and its practical applications.
She has designed and co-presented diversity sessions at Grace Hopper India and Grace Hopper US, at the ACM India conference 2011 and internally within Google.
She has three daughters: the twins are 17 and her older daughter is 22.

Searching for Information: Anytime, Anywhere
Surabhi Gupta, Google; Reena Lee, Google
Session is available on-demand here (duration 0:25:36) (Mountain View)
The life span of a Google search query normally lasts less than half a second. Yet, each query involves many different steps that must be completed before results can be delivered to a person seeking information. What are these steps taken to handle each query?
As the number of mobile devices has significantly increased, people now want answers faster than ever. You can search the web and your phone, call your contacts, send emails, get directions and listen to music, all without worrying about having to type. Google Now on Android gets you just the right information at just the right time. It tells you how much traffic to expect before you leave for work, what events to go to over the weekend and your favorite teams scores while they’re playing.
Come and learn about the innovations in search engine technology.
About Surabhi and Reena:
Surabhi is a Staff Software Engineer at Google working on web search. She joined in 2007 and spent four years working on improving the ranking of search results. Her most recent project is building a task based search experience, where she is a founding member. She holds a Masters degree from Stanford University and a Bachelors degree from Stony Brook University, both in Computer Science. She spends her free time mentoring and has worked with several programs both within Google and outside like the Engineering Practicum program, Technovation and MAGIC.
Reena Lee joined Google in 2007, and is currently a Technical Program Manager in Android Partnership Engineering. Prior to Google, she held various positions in hardware engineering roles at HP and Intel. Reena earned her BS/MS in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and an MBA from the University of Texas in Austin. Reena has been active in diversity issues, and has received a number of awards, including Distinguished New Engineer, Society of Women Engineers national award (Oct 2009).
